When you have to register

The CRA treats you as a small supplier while your worldwide taxable sales stay at or under $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Go over $30,000 in a single quarter and you must register from the day of the sale that crossed the line. Cross it over several quarters and you stop being a small supplier at the end of the month after that quarter. You can register voluntarily before then, which lets you claim input tax credits. Charities and public bodies have different tests. Details are on the CRA registration page.

Limits of this calculator

  • It does simple arithmetic and rounds to the cent. The CRA notes its own calculator can differ by a cent or two for the same reason.
  • It does not know whether your product is zero rated or exempt, such as basic groceries.

Frequently asked questions

What is the HST rate in Ontario?

Ontario charges 13% HST, which combines the 5% federal GST and the provincial part into one tax, according to the CRA rate table.

Did the Nova Scotia HST rate change?

Yes. The CRA rate table shows Nova Scotia HST went from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. The calculator uses 14%.

Do I have to charge GST/HST as a small business?

Not until you pass the small supplier threshold. The CRA says you are a small supplier while your taxable sales stay at or under $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Once you go over, you must register and start charging. You can also register voluntarily before that.

Does this calculator include PST or QST?

No. It works out GST or HST only. Provinces that do not use HST, such as British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan, run their own sales tax with their own rules about what is taxable. The table lists the rates the CRA shows for reference.
